The Radical with Nick Terzo

Nov 13, 2020

The legendary Danny Kortchmar and Leland Sklar of The Immediate Family join Nick today for a chat on their new EP which just recently debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard chart.

These gentlemen have been frequent collaborators both on stage and in the studio with artists such as Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Graham Nash, Neil Young, and David Crosby amongst many others.

As songwriters and musicians, they have contributed to many great albums and chart-topping singles; this is a great one, folks, as both these guys have seen it all in rock and roll.

Key Takeaways

[1:30] Nick welcomes Danny and Leland and asks them how they’ve adjusted to the pandemic; they touch on releasing their most recent album songs as EP’s as well as the positive aspects of having had a 5-decade long friendship.

[6:40] Danny offers that Leland is one of the most in-demand musicians in the world and is constantly asked in for sessions. Leland shares what his most recent and fast-paced experience has been like “the year went away like a fart in a hurricane.”

[9:28] Has Leland played in 2,600 albums? Really? He does mention that the number isn’t really important… Danny and Leland talk about what it means to never live in the past and how it enables life-long creativity.

[11:30] Danny opens up about what area of his work he hopes his legacy will be; spoiler, it’s all of it! Leland talks about his upbringing and the place music had in it.

[13:16] After having played some of their new album live, everything shut down. They share about what collaborations they did on some of the EP’s as well as what the plans are for recording the rest of the material.

[15:35] Leland breaks down, and shows what kinds of instruments he owns — and in what quantities — while amp-wise, he’s got what he needs for the rest of his life, in his garage. Danny also talks about his collection and he shares his take on the use of pedals!

[18:39] Style is something unique to each player in the band, Leland shares an anecdote from a Christmas show he did in L.A.

[20:00] Ordering food at the right time might be THE single most important thing about making a record according to Danny and Leland.

[24:44] Danny shares a Jack Nicholson anecdote and Leland talks about how the song “It’s Raining Men” was born right in front of his eyes. The guys talk about the insane genius that ran around in the corridor at A&M Studios in the ’80s.

[31:00] Who are Danny and Leland listening to these days?

[33:14] At noon Pacific on November 13th, a Stage Live will re-air.

[33:28] Nick thanks both of his guests for coming on the show to share their stories.
